Sync was nice but also a pita. I remeber a sales guy having on of the first celluar cards in his notebook and he flew to a foreign country for a week. Notes sync kept the card online and we got a thank you letter from the provider. Later in my network job it was very often Notes clocking the lines, keeping dial on demand open and requiering the implementation of WAN accelarators.
You could put it another way: Every time Ray joined a new company he startet to reimplement Plato Notes/the idea of a synced database.
Groove Networks did that and its a shame that all thats left at Microsoft is OneDrive.

Hopefully forgejo gets federation in the near future because öets face it, opening an issue on Github is easy because you have an user there but you wont get one on my private forgejo instance.
Also, a tool like gh for forgejo would be nice.
this is our stack too, we initially ran BuildKite but switched to Woodpecker for Forgeo. Coming from Github there's a few basic things that are missing in woodpekcer that may frustrate you but it's improving regularly.
The current idea of passwordless seems to be "give me your email and put in the 6 digits i send you" - who ever pushes this absurdity, I hope you have an itch and short arms.
The security implications are one thing, but another issue to me with email codes is that you now have to wait for an email to arrive. At worst this can take a few minutes, at which point I'm no longer interested in logging in, unless it was for something I absolutely have to do. At best I have to open my mail client or log in to the webmail, while with a password or passkey all I need is Keepass running.
The sad part of it, way back we had to deal with icq, msn, Yahoo and then had the chance to reunite every one with XMPP. But that dream failed.
Now we have a gazillion of services with anoying things like FOSS projects using closed source services like WhatsApp as their community base.
Last year ours bloomed, too. The problem is that it happens to late in the year and I can’t wrap that 5m high “tree” to protect from the cold. So the bananas were the size of your pinky. Next problem, once they bloom, they die. So yes, climate change is real. For comparison, we are located in south Germany near Stuttgart and we also have a fig tree and an olive tree in our garden.
We have had figs in southern Germany for decades. Not all varieties grow well here of course but just having figs growing doesn't really tell you much.

You can see that the mean temperatures from April to October are about 2 degrees higher in Budapest than in Stuttgart, which is really significant. To give you an idea, that's a lot closer to Avignon (France) [2], which is a Mediterranean climate, than to Stuttgart which is considered oceanic.
I also remember people saying that they could get 2 harvests of figs a year in Moravia (CZ), which you will not get in Germany. Moravia is not Hungary, but it's getting there, climate-wise, and it illustrates nicely the difference a few degrees (mean) make.
No, bring back NetNews/NNTP. This spreading of communities over dozens of (commercial) services is annoying. And don't get me started about open source projects using WhatsApp groups as their main place to discuss things.
