Blake Lemoine, and it wasn't Gemini it was an earlier system called LaMDA

I have a hard time getting upset about AI hallucinations when I do it too :]

An earlier version of ChatGPT (2 or 3 iinh) was too dangerous to release, yet here we are several version later, and with open weights far more capable

why should we believe the fears they tell us today when the ones they told us about in prior years never happened?

What about all the fanfare re. Cyber security / hacks?

The businesses that matter are all standing fine.

It’s too cringey.

That's exactly the case

It's also not computable, as in chaotic. Small differences in initial positions will lead to unpredictably large differences in trajectory (with small and large having specific meanings to match the formal definition of a chaotic system).

PunchTornado was first, fr2029 was second

i made no such comment. reported for harassment.

so you just happen to be posting in a thread where some random user said you made a comment but you made no comments whatsoever

You deleted the verbatim comment after it was pointed out. One was in thread and one was a stand alone comment. I was curious which was the throwaway so clicked into both profiles

Love your username

I have a different, more sinister, analogy in mind but yours work as well

That intelligence is "just" retrieval within a huge corpus is an old one, and the one I am thinking about a lot these days: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44060672

I think there's definitely more than just retrieval, although no doubt it helps.

The actual original dunk from that page is great enough to be reproduced here again verbatim:

> during the months of autumn [...] Work is left to feebler hands. ... In those months the great oracle becomes —what at other times it is not—simply silly. In spring and early summer, the Times is often violent, unfair, fallacious, inconsistent, intentionally unmeaning, even positively blundering, but it is very seldom merely silly. ... In the dead of autumn, when the second and third rate hands are on, we sink from nonsense written with a purpose to nonsense written because the writer must write either nonsense or nothing.

Sounds like "The Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science, and Art" where this came from was a wonderful little venture. Is there anything like it today?

Feels like "we sink from nonsense written with a purpose to nonsense written because the writer must write either nonsense or nothing" accurately describes HN sometimes :D
