Work vs. shoot? Can you explain?

From professional wrestling / carny language: a "work" is something staged for the crowd, whereas a "shoot" (straight shooting) is something that actually happened.

Kind of like the “uncooked spaghetti length” sorting algorithm: gravity. Hold them in your fist vertically, let them gently fall to a flat surface. Sorted.

Spaghetti length is made visible (quickly comparable), but it's still not sorted.

Dropping spaghetti is an O(1) operation. Once that's done there's a straightforward O(N) sort by removing noodles in the order that they're intersected by horizontal plane descending from max_noodle_length to the table.

Assuming that the spaghetti is being held in such a way that longer pieces hit the surface first. If the pieces are being held at random points, or such that the bottoms line up rather than the tops, then this approach won't work.

You don't have to assume that. We can take each randomly oriented noodle and orient it correctly in O(1) as a preprocessing step. Since the complexity would be additive, the overall complexity remains O(N).

It is sorted chronologically

Because it is exercise for the imaginative mind. Reading can force a reader to build worlds. Some readers are good at this, others need practice. To call reading “consumptive” is severely minimizing literature’s impact on communication throughout human history.

Even looking back at my mother reading Stephen King and romance novels … her reading undoubtedly shaped her and helped her understand the world and her experiences within it.

Note: this comment written from the bathtub after putting down “The Stand” by Stephen King, you know, one of those “little value” books.

> Because it is exercise for the imaginative mind.

So is playing, daydreaming, acting/theater, various visual arts, etc..

> To call reading “consumptive” is severely minimizing literature’s impact on communication throughout human history.

The topic is centered around reading for pleasure, not for all facets and purposes that reading serves, e.g., documentation, communication, etc..

> her reading undoubtedly shaped her and helped her understand the world and her experiences within it.

But why does the medium have to be reading to get this benefit? Would listening to a storyteller or an audiobook not confer the same benefits?

Is this just an ad for whimsical animations? Seemed like an abrupt change.

Yeah, this couldn't have really gone any better for the author, opinion piece hitting HN with a link for a course in it.

I understand the need to make a living but hard to take this stuff seriously/sincerely with the, "and buy my course!" angle.

It feels like AI topic on HN is going through the phase of when /r/stablediffusion subreddit was going through phase of real artist vs ai artist discussions.

Came here to comment this. I've already saw another article by this author and it all leads towards the course. Not cool :/

My first operating system and GUI was GEOS on the Commodore 64. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GEOS_(8-bit_operating_system)

Is PC/GEOS (GeoWorks Ensemble) in there ? Or does it count as a DOS application ?

Mine as well. Felt like I imagined a Mac felt like (I was Mac-envious in those days).

Reminds me of the Arrested Development scene: Bob Loblaw Lobs Law Bomb.

I’ll be working on my law blog. The Bob Loblaw Law Blog.

I was thinking Lesley Knope in Parks and Recreation. She was always pitching these kind of headlines.

This scene nearly killed me, haha.

Also the tongue twisters from princess carolyn

"BoHo go bye bye for joey pogo? that's a no go bro"

There was one that went on for like couple of minutes in the later seasons, with courtney portnoy but there's not a video for some reason.

Blending hot liquids requires care because turning on and heating the air causes the lid to blow off. Most blenders are limited by physics. Vitamix have an analog dial for speed which allows you to heat the air more slowly. Turning off bubble? Maybe I’ve experienced that … but seems like an inexperienced operator with hot liquids and powerful motors is just a recipe for disaster.

TeleGuard is an app downloaded more a million times that markets itself as a secure way to chat. The app uploads users’ private keys to the company’s server, and makes decryption of messages trivial.

This is a valuable comment. It's the exact demoralization that others fear we are headed.

From DYMO: Dear user, Thank you for contacting [DYMO]. I am sorry to hear about the inconvenience you are experiencing.

Kindly be informed, that unfortunately, but the DYMO Label Software v.8. is incompatible with the new macOS 26 Tahoe. The software is officially obsolete, we do not develop it anymore. The last update for it was introduced when Apple released their macOS 11 Big Sur, it was in 2020. The printers you have, with the exception of LabelWriter 450, are incompatible with the current software.

LabelWriter Duo and LabelManager PnP Wireless are obsolete for some time now (keep in mind that LabelWriter Duo is a 20 years old printer) and there are no drivers for them in a our current DYMO Connect software.

LabelWriter 450 was still being manufactured when the DYMO Connect was released, therefore drivers for that model were and still are included in the software.

Those older models would be working on an older OS (up to macOS Sequoia) and on Windows PC. Once again, I am sorry for the inconvenience you are experiencing.

Disclosure: I am the developer of Label LIVE.
