I had this exact thought. Maybe it's just me, but I grow increasingly tired of content published Medium. I'm not really too sure if I can nail down exactly what it is, though. Maybe I am too influenced by Anti-Medium arguments. Idk.
The article points out why AA is not a salient contrast metric, but also not true—in the design page, you have very limited control, and then after leaving the design page, the color you selected are changed and used differently (i.e. the highlight).
